The Olfactory System and Aromatherapy

The olfactory system is the biological pathway through which aromatherapy exerts its most immediate effects. It is the only sense with a direct connection to the brain’s emotional and memory centers.

The Pathway of Scent

  1. Inhalation: Aromatic molecules enter the nasal cavity
  2. Olfactory epithelium: Molecules dissolve in mucus and bind to olfactory receptor neurons
  3. Signal transduction: Each receptor type responds to specific molecular shapes
  4. Olfactory bulb: Signals are processed and sent to the brain
  5. Limbic system: The amygdala (emotions) and hippocampus (memory) receive direct input
