Essential Oils and Pet Safety
Many essential oils are toxic to pets, particularly cats. Understanding which oils are safe and which to avoid is essential for responsible aromatherapy in homes with animals.
Cats (Most Vulnerable)
Cats lack a key liver enzyme (glucuronyl transferase) needed to metabolize many essential oil compounds. Avoid all of the following around cats:
- Tea tree
- Eucalyptus
- Peppermint
- Cinnamon, clove, oregano, thyme (phenol-rich oils)
- Pine, spruce, fir (high in monoterpenes)
- Citrus oils (concentrated forms)
Dogs (Less Sensitive But Still at Risk)
Dogs can tolerate more oils than cats but some are still dangerous:
- Tea tree (toxic even topically)
- Wintergreen
- Pennyroyal
- High-phenol oils at any significant exposure
Safe Practices
- Always diffuse in well-ventilated rooms
- Ensure pets can leave the room
- Never apply essential oils directly to pets
- Store oils securely out of reach
- Use a veterinary aromatherapist for pet-specific applications
