Essential Oils and Drug Interactions
Essential oils can potentially interact with medications through various mechanisms. While research is limited, caution is warranted.
Known Interaction Risks
Blood-Thinning Medications
Oils to use with caution: Wintergreen, birch, clove, cinnamon. These contain compounds (methyl salicylate, eugenol) that may potentiate anticoagulant effects.
Antidepressants (SSRIs, MAOIs)
Oils to use with caution: Oils high in linalool (lavender) may potentiate sedative effects. Avoid combining strongly sedating oils with sedative medications.
Diabetes Medications
Oils to use with caution: Cinnamon, geranium. Some oils may affect blood sugar levels.
CYP450 Interactions
Some essential oil compounds may inhibit liver enzymes (CYP450) that metabolize drugs, potentially affecting medication levels.
General Rule
If you take any regular medication, consult your healthcare provider before beginning aromatherapy. Use inhalation as the safest method when interactions are a concern.
