Essential Oil Contraindications

Understanding contraindications is critical for safe aromatherapy practice.

General Contraindications

Epilepsy

Avoid: rosemary (camphor CT), sage, hyssop, camphor, fennel. These contain compounds that may lower the seizure threshold.

High Blood Pressure

Use with caution: rosemary, thyme, hyssop. Some stimulating oils may raise blood pressure.

Low Blood Pressure

Use with caution: ylang ylang, lavender, marjoram. These can lower blood pressure further.

Kidney Disease

Avoid: juniper berry, wintergreen. These may stress the kidneys.

Liver Disease

Avoid prolonged use of phenol-rich oils: oregano, thyme (CT thymol), clove.

Estrogen-Sensitive Conditions

Avoid: fennel, star anise, clary sage. These contain compounds with estrogenic activity.
