Essential Oil Allergies and Sensitivities
Allergic reactions to essential oils, while uncommon, can range from mild irritation to severe sensitization.
Types of Reactions
Irritant Contact Dermatitis
Immediate reaction from direct skin contact with undiluted or high-concentration oils. Symptoms: redness, burning, itching.
Allergic Contact Dermatitis
Delayed immune response (12-72 hours after exposure). Once sensitized, reactions occur with every future exposure, even at low concentrations.
Sensitization
The most serious concern. Repeated use of an oil (especially undiluted) can cause permanent sensitization. The body treats the oil as a threat, triggering allergic reactions with every subsequent exposure.
Patch Testing
- Dilute the oil to 2% in carrier oil
- Apply a small amount to the inner forearm
- Cover with a bandage
- Wait 24-48 hours
- Check for redness, itching, or swelling
What to Do If a Reaction Occurs
- Remove the oil immediately with carrier oil (NOT water)
- Wash with mild soap
- Apply a soothing cream
- Seek medical attention for severe reactions
